ASICS USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships expected to attract biggest field ever

The UNI-Dome will be packed with some of the nation’s best young wrestlers this weekend.

The ASICS USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships is expected to attract its biggest field ever for the event that is set for Friday through Sunday on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

Monday night’s pre-registration ended with 1,994 wrestlers signed up to compete, according to Pete Isais, USA Wrestling´s Director of National Events. The previous record was 1,646 in 2004.

The addition of Junior and Bantam divisions this year has helped push the numbers to an all-time high. There are 365 Juniors registered for the event and another 102 wrestlers in the Bantam division.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin Friday night with the preliminaries in Juniors and Cadets. The tournament is set to conclude on Sunday afternoon.

This event is the finale of USA Wrestling’s Ultimate Challenge Series of Folkstyle Wrestling. It also is the first of three events in USA Wrestling’s prestigiou
