Dr. Dan Gould, past USA Wrestling Man of the Year, is among honorees at Citizenship Through Sports A

RESTON, VA, June 2, 2005 – Dr. Dan Gould, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports and a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University, will be honored by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) this weekend at the 2005 Citizenship Through Sports Alliance (CTSA) Awards Dinner at the Renaissance Grant Hotel in St. Louis, MO. During his career, he has focused equal attention on research, teaching and service activities in applied sport psychology. Gould has been heavily involved in coaching education, making over 600 presentations. In 1999 Dr. Gould was inducted into the NASPE Hall of Fame which honors outstanding individuals who have achieved high levels of excellence in sport and physical activity and inspired others by their example of what quality physical activity and sport programs can do to make a better world. The CTSA Awards Dinner, co-hosted by the St. Louis Sports Commission, honors outstanding individuals in the athletics world who promote the values of sportsmanship, ethical play in athletic competition, citizenship and community service. Each year, the alliance presents awards to honorees from each of its 12 member organizations: Major League Baseball, the NCAA, NAIA, NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA, U.S. Olympic Committee, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The CTSA is the largest coalition of professional and amateur athletics organizations in the United States focused on sportsmanship and building character through sport. In all, 17 athletes and sports administrators will be recognized in St. Louis. The 2005 CTSA award recipients include: • P.J. High School (NFHS) • Doug Weight, St. Louis Blues (NHL) Prior to his current position Dan Gould was the Bank of America Excellence Professor in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (UNCG). Dr. Gould taught courses in the sport and exercise psychology and was heavily involved in graduate education. In 1994 he received UNCG´s prestigious all-University Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award and in 2001 he was honored with the American Psychological Association Division 47 Professional Education and Training Award. Involved in a wide range of sports, he has consulted extensively with numerous athletes of all age and skill levels and has served as a performance enhancement consultant with the U.S. Ski Team, NASCAR pit crews and drivers, professional tennis players and numerous Olympic athletes. In addition, he has also served on the U.S. Olympic coaching development committee for over 10 years and co-chaired the sport science and technology committee. Currently, he serves as vice chair of the USTA Sport Science and Coaching Committee. In recent years Dr. Gould has become involved in executive coaching working individually with corporate executives and conducting performance enhancement sessions with the highly regarded English-based Lane4 management group. He has also conducted sessions for the UNC Greensboro Bryan School of Business and Economics. Actively involved in research, Dr. Gould has studied the stress-athletic performance relationship, sources of athletic stress, athlete motivation, youth sports issues, and sport psychological skills training use and effectiveness. He has over 80 scholarly publications and over 50 applied sport psychology research dissemination-service publications. He has been invited to speak on sport psychology topics in over 20 countries. Two research-based children´s sports texts have been co-edited by Dr. Gould and he served as one of the founding coeditors of The Sport Psychologist. Finally, he has made over 150 regional, national and international scholarly presentations. Dr. Gould has co-authored two books, Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology (with Bob Weinberg) and Understanding Psychological Preparation for Sport: Theory and Practice of Elite Performers (with Lew Hardy and Graham Jones). He is especially proud of the numerous masters degree and 18 plus doctoral students that he has had the opportunity to advise and who have gone on to pursue careers in sport psychology. A certified consultant and active fellow in Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP), he now serves as President of AAASP. Other notable distinctions include being named 1985 USA Wrestling Man of the Year for his sport science work, the first Australian sport psychology scholar, and his inclusion on a listing of top ten U.S. sport psychology specialists in the 1980´s. Past NASPE recipients of the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Award include Dr. Jody Brylinsky of Western Michigan University and Dr. Jay Coakley of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for their outstanding careers as educators and mentors to so many professionals and future professionals.
