Mike Zadick named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 14-20Iowa/Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 14-20.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Zadick made his second straight U.S. World Freestyle Team by sweeping Nate Gallick in a Special Wrestle-Off for the final World Team spot at 60 kg/132 lbs. Zadick won the first match of the best-of-3 series over Gallick 0-1, 1-0, 4-2 before prevailing in the second match 1-0, 0-1, 3-0.
The matches were held on Aug. 16 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Zadick, a 2006 World silver medalist, now advances to the World Championships on Sept. 17-23 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Zadick is an assistant coach at the University of Iowa and a past All-American for the Hawkeyes. He is one of three past University of Iowa wrestlers on the U.S. World Freestyle Team. Past Hawkeye NCAA champions Doug Schwab (145.5 lbs.) and Joe Williams (185) also are on the U.S. team. Schwab made his first World Team this year while Williams is a two-time World bronze medalist.
