Rob Eiter named assistant coach at Penn

University of Pennsylvania Sports Information
10/20/2006

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania has named former Olympian Rob Eiter as assistant coach of wrestling. Eiter joins Head Coach Zeke Jones’ staff and will help coach a team that returns two All-Americans and three NCAA qualifiers from 2005-06.

Eiter comes to Penn from Northwestern, where he served as an assistant for four seasons under Head Coach Tim Cysewski. Eiter helped mentor the Wildcats to a 13th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. Last season, the ’Cats qualified seven wrestlers to NCAA’s, with three grapplers earning All-America honors.

“Rob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Jones said. “His demonstrated experience in recruiting and his technical wrestling knowledge will be an asset to our team.”

Prior to Northwestern, Eiter was an assistant at Clarion University from 1993 to 1998. While there, he helped Sheldon Thomas win an NCAA Championship and coached Clarion’s first four-time All-America, Bryan Stout, as well as five other All-Americans.

In 1999, Eiter coached the women’s world championship team.

In addition to coaching, Eiter has had a standout wrestling career. He was a member of the 1992 and 1996 Olympic freestyle teams and the 1993 and 1995 World Championship teams, and he was a five-time U.S. Open national champion and two-time World Cup silver medalist.

Eiter earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State in 1991.

The Quakers will start the season on Nov. 12 with a visit to the Michigan State Open. The home opener will be the annual Keystone Classic on Nov. 19 at The Palestra.
