Roye Oliver named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for July 31-Aug. 6de, Calif./No Mercy) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for July 31-August 6.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Oliver won a gold medal this past weekend at the Veterans Freestyle World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
Oliver, a native of Omaha, Neb. and a past All-American for Arizona State, won the Division D (51-55 years old) title at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. Oliver beat Turkey’s Bekir Sahinal in the finals.
Oliver knocked off 10-time world champion Rahim Abofi of Iran in the semifinals.
Oliver was joined as gold medalist at the Veterans World Championships by Ron Cole of the U.S. Cole, from Auburn, Wash., won the title in Division E (56 years and older) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.
