UPDATED: Askren wins bronze on final day at Kiev International in Ukraine

Askren (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids) captured a bronze medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the final day of the Kiev International in Ukraine on Sunday.

Askren had a 4-1 record in the tournament, including a victory over Oleg Bilotserkovskyy of Ukraine in the bronze medal match. Askren won his first three bouts, with wins of Georg Hart of Germany, Andrey Milsurov of Belarus and Azruvyr Adjiev of Kazakhstan.

His only loss came in the semifinals to Abdulhakim Shapiev of Kazakhstan, the eventual silver medalist.

Askren has been very successful so far this international season, his first full year concentrating only on freestyle after his outstanding career at the Univ. of Missouri. Askren has won gold medals at the Hargobind International in Canada and the New York AC Holiday International in the United States, and won two matches for the USA at the Freestyle World Cup.

Askren was the only U.S. medalist on Sunday. Three other U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers were defeated in their first match and were eliminated from the competition.

His medal brings the total number of U.S. medals at the competition to five, after four Americans won medals on Saturday. Trent Paulson (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a gold medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle wrestling on Saturday. Three U.S. women wrestlers also won medals, a silver by Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and bronze medals by Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

There were no U.S. women competing on Sunday, as competition was held in the three non-Olympic weight classes and the U.S. had no entries.
