USA Wrestling received the following letter from the Giles family

Dear Friends and Members of the Wrestling Community,

Leonie Giles has asked me to address the wrestling community on her behalf.

It is with great sadness and regret that I announce the death of my friend and mentor Tod Giles. Tod died peacefully on his way to the hospital on Wednesday evening. He was 45 years old. Tod is survived by his loving wife Leonie, and two children, Isaiah, 6, and Tori, 4.

Tod was not only an ambassador for our sport he was a mentor and inspiration to everyone he touched. As a wrestling Coach, Tod was one of the most gracious people the sport has ever known. A coach at countless clubs, the founder of the DYNAMICS School, instructor for the MWA Beat the Streets program and the CHAMP Training center, as well as volunteer at several other programs, it often seemed as if he was everywhere. Tod’s unbridled passion and determination, to touch as many young athletes’ lives as possible, is what drove him everyday of his life.

This passion and determination were also evident at home. If you ever had the privilege of sitting down with Tod, it was clear, in just moments, how proud he was to be a husband and father. It was this commitment that kept his wife and two beautiful children smiling and happy everyday.

A fund has been established to support the future needs of Isaiah and Tori. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to this fund. More detailed information will be available in the official obituary, which will be released on Sunday, as well as at the funeral home.

The Family will be receiving visitors on Monday from 5pm-8pm at Hannemann Funeral Home: 88 S. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 12pm, United Church of Spring Valley, 11 East Church Street, Spring Valley, NY 10977. Tod Giles passed away
From Beat the Streets Wrestling Program

Tod Giles, an Olympic Alternate and Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, passed away last night.

Giles has been involved with the Beat the Streets Program by teaching new coaches both at the CHAMPS Training Center as well as for the certification of the Beat the Streets Coaches in March. Giles was an excellent role model for kids and coaches alike.

Giles was a friend and a wrestling brother to many in the New York City area as well as nationally. He was a great father and a husband, and he leaves behind two beautiful children and a wonderful wife.

Tod was not feeling well for the last three days. He passed out in the car as his wife was taking him to the hospital, and died in the hospital.

Doctors are still determining the cause of his death. Funeral and wake arrangements have not been set up, but will be posted as soon as they are determined.

We will greatly miss Tod Giles, and will keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts.

Tod Giles, of Suffern, N.Y., has been an active leader within USA Wrestling for many years, serving on the Board of Directors and taking leadership roles with many standing committees, including the Executive Committee, the Athletes Advisory Committee, the Junior Olympic Committee and the Greco-Roman Sport Committee.

Giles was a successful Greco-Roman wrestler, competing on the national and international levels for many years. Giles placed second at the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival, earning a No. 2 spot on the national team, and was a member of Greco-Roman Team USA a number of times. He wrestled for the U.S. Marine Corps, won a number of Armed Forces titles, and competed internationally at the CISM World Military Championships.

He was the first NCAA Div. I All-American at Boston University, competing for coach Carl Adams, earning All-American status in 1984. He wrestled three seasons at Boston University, after starting his career at the Univ. of Rhode Island. Giles placed in the New York State high school championships as a prep wrestler.

Giles served as the head wrestling coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for four seasons, leading its Div. I team which competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He was also an assistant coach at Boston University.

Giles also coached at the high school and club levels, and worked with numerous young wrestlers in his community. He was active with the Metropolitan Wrestling Association in New York City, and was a respected clinician and coach. Giles has friends all over the United States and the world through wrestling, and USA Wrestling gives its sincere condolences to Tod’s family and friends.
