Vering named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for July 24-30o Springs, Colo./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for July 24-30.
Vering won a gold medal in Greco-Roman at 84 kg/185 lbs. at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 24. He was one of three U.S. Greco-Roman gold medalists at the Pan American Games, joined by Harry Lester (145.5) and Justin Ruiz (211.5).
Vering won three matches on the way to the title, including a 5-0, 2-1 win over Eddy Bartolozzy of Venezuela in the finals. The other opponents he defeated were Augilar Hernandez Rafael of Mexico and Jose Arias of the Dominican Republic. Vering won all of his bouts in two straight periods, and allowed just two points the entire tournament.
It was a second career Pan American Games medal for Vering, who was a silver medalist at the 2003 Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic.
Vering, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, will be competing in the World Championships for the fourth time in his career in September in Baku, Azerbaijan.
